Continuous symmetry: a model for human figural perception.

چکیده
Symmetry is usually viewed as a discrete feature: an object is either symmetric or non-symmetric. In this presentation, symmetry is treated as a continuous feature and a continuous measure of symmetry (the Symmetry Distance) is defined. This measure can be easily evaluated for any shape or pattern in any dimension. A preliminary study presented here shows that the Symmetry Distance is commensurate with human perceptual experience. Good correlation is found between the continuous symmetry values and the perceived goodness of figures.

Measuring Convexity for Figure/Ground Separation
In human perception, convex surfaces have a strong tendency to be perceived as the ”figure”. Convexity has a stronger influence on figural organization than other global shape properties, such as symmetry ([9]). And yet, there has been very little work on convexity properties in computer vision. We present a model for figure/ground segregatation which exhibits a preference for convex regions as...
متن کاملFigural aftereffects in the perception of faces.
We examined figural aftereffects in images of human faces, for which changes in configuration are highly discriminable. Observers either matched or rated faces before or after viewing distorted images of faces. Prior adaptation strongly biases face perception by causing the original face to appear distorted in a direction opposite to the adapting distortion. Aftereffects transferred across diff...
متن کاملMapping the perceptual structure of rectangles through goodness-of-fit ratings.
Three experiments were carried out to investigate the internal structure of a rectangular frame to test Arnheim's (1974 Art and Visual Perception, 1988 The Power of the Center) proposals about its 'structural skeleton'. Observers made subjective ratings of how well a small probe circle fit within a rectangle at different interior positions. In experiment 1, ratings of 77 locations were highest ...
متن کاملA dynamic neural field model of temporal order judgments.
Temporal ordering of events is biased, or influenced, by perceptual organization-figure-ground organization-and by spatial attention. For example, within a region assigned figural status or at an attended location, onset events are processed earlier (Lester, Hecht, & Vecera, 2009; Shore, Spence, & Klein, 2001), and offset events are processed for longer durations (Hecht & Vecera, 2011; Rolke, U...
متن کاملEdge-region grouping in figure-ground organization and depth perception.
Edge-region grouping (ERG) is proposed as a unifying and previously unrecognized class of relational information that influences figure-ground organization and perceived depth across an edge. ERG occurs when the edge between two regions is differentially grouped with one region based on classic principles of similarity grouping. The ERG hypothesis predicts that the grouped side will tend to be ...
